How We Build and Check This Site
Where Do the Office Details Come From?
From the Social Security Administration. Every office name, address, phone number and set of hours comes from SSA: its open-data office files, updated , checked office by office against SSA's Office Locator on . That covers 1,188 field offices, 36 resident stations, 7 card centers and 90 video service sites. Locations come from the U.S. Census Bureau, and guides use facts from ssa.gov only.
The Office Data
SSA publishes its office rosters as open data for app developers. The site reads three of them:
- Field offices (1,188): the regular local Social Security offices, with SSA's office code, name, street address, phone and fax numbers, and opening and closing times for each weekday.
- Resident stations (36): smaller offices, mostly in rural areas, with the same details.
- Video service delivery sites (90): partner locations such as senior centers, tribal offices, veterans' centers and libraries where you can meet SSA staff by video.
The Office Locator Check
SSA's open-data files lag behind its live Office Locator. On October 1, 2026, every office the locator returns was compared with the files, searching from every state until no new office appeared. That check:
- added 24 offices the files leave out, with the name, address, phone number and hours the locator lists, including 7 Social Security Card Centers, which handle card tasks only;
- flagged 38 offices the locator lists as limited-service, which don't handle card replacements or updates;
- dropped internal support units that appear in the files but aren't public offices.
Names are shown as SSA lists them, with SSA's short forms spelled out (for example, "Ft" becomes "Fort"). Addresses, phone numbers and hours aren't edited by hand, with one exception: where SSA's own record shows an impossible time, such as a 4:00 AM closing on one weekday when every other weekday closes at 4:00 PM, the page shows the time used on the other weekdays.
How Offices Are Placed on the Map
Each office's street address is matched with the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder, which returns its latitude and longitude. 1,229 offices are placed this way. When an address doesn't match, the office is placed at the point SSA's Office Locator shows for it, or, failing that, at its city's point in the Census Bureau's 2023 Gazetteer files (1 offices); distances to those offices are approximate and are marked on the office page. 1 offices matched neither, so they are listed with their address and hours but without a distance. No location is guessed.
How Distances Are Measured
Distances are straight-line miles between two points, not driving distance, so the trip by road is usually longer. City pages measure from the city's Gazetteer point. The office finder measures from the center of the ZIP code you type (2023 Census Gazetteer) or from your device's location if you allow it. Video service sites are shown when they are within 60 miles.
How Hours Are Shown
Hours are SSA's published opening and closing times for each weekday, Monday through Friday. Social Security offices are closed on weekends and federal holidays. The "open now" and "today" lines use the office's local time zone, worked out from its state (and its longitude in states split by a time-zone line). Offices can close for weather or emergencies; SSA posts those closings on its office closings page.
How the Data Is Kept Current
SSA updates its office files "as needed." When SSA posts a new file, we re-read it, compare every office with the previous version and flag offices that moved, opened or closed, then rebuild the pages. Each office page shows the date of the SSA data it uses. The full roster was last checked against the Office Locator on October 1, 2026.
SSA's Office Locator is the official tool for finding the office that serves your address, and every office page links to it. Check it, or call the office, before you travel.
How the Pages Are Built
- Office pages (1,231) show one office's details, a map link, its nearest other offices and nearby video service sites.
- City pages (3,904) list the closest offices to each city, nearest first.
- State pages (56, including the District of Columbia and U.S. territories) list every office in the state.
How the Guides Are Written
The 17 guides use facts from ssa.gov pages only. Each fact is recorded with the page it came from and the date it was checked, automated checks confirm that every figure traces to those records, and each guide shows its review date. Guides explain SSA's rules in plain words; they don't replace SSA's own instructions for your situation.
Who Checks the Site
Pages are reviewed for accuracy and clarity by Michael Rupe, U.S. Air Force veteran. Read the editorial policy for the standards every page meets.
Corrections
If an office has moved, changed its hours or phone number, or closed, use the contact form with the page address and what changed. We check every report against SSA's data and the Office Locator and correct the page when they confirm it.
