Social Security Office Hours and Appointments
What Are Social Security Office Hours?
Standard Social Security office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and 1,194 of the 1,231 offices in SSA's data keep that schedule. Offices close on weekends and all federal holidays. A few keep shorter or shifted hours, so check your office's page from the office finder. SSA's phone line runs longer, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time on weekdays, and SSA advises booking an appointment before you visit.

Standard Social Security Office Hours
SSA field offices run on a weekday schedule. In SSA’s office data, checked against SSA’s Office Locator on October 1, 2026, 1,194 of the 1,231 offices are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. That covers nearly every office in the mainland U.S., from the Boston office on Causeway Street to the Las Vegas office on South Buffalo Drive.
Offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. All Social Security offices also close on federal holidays. When an office is closed, you still have two options: SSA’s automated phone line, which runs 24 hours a day, and its online services.
Every office page here shows that office’s own hours by day, its address and its local phone number. Search yours with the office finder.
Offices With Different Hours
A small group of offices keeps a different schedule. Time zones explain some of them, as in Hawaii and the Pacific territories. Others are shorter or close on one weekday. These come straight from SSA’s office data:
| Office | Hours |
|---|---|
| Honolulu, Hilo, Kapolei and Wailuku, HI | Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM |
| Pago Pago, American Samoa | Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM |
| Guam (Barrigada) | Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM |
| Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands | Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM |
| Juneau, AK | Monday to Friday, 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM |
| Sheridan, WY | Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM |
| Rockaway Park, NY | Closed Monday; Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM |
| Ridge Road (West Seneca), NY | Closed Thursday; other weekdays 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM |
| Wilmington (New Castle), DE | Tuesday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM; other weekdays 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM |
Two offices show no public hours in the data: Bloomsburg, PA and Logan, WV. SSA’s closings page confirms both were offering phone service only, with no in-person service, until further notice as of October 1, 2026. Call their local numbers for help.
Is Social Security Open on Saturday?
No. Offices don’t open on weekends, and the national phone line takes live calls on weekdays only. On a Saturday you can still:
- Use the automated phone line at 1-800-772-1213, open 24 hours a day, to request a benefit verification letter, a replacement Medicare card, a replacement SSA-1099 tax form or an office address.
- Sign in to a my Social Security account to change your address or direct deposit, print proof of benefits, or request a replacement card in most areas.
- Apply online for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits.
How to Make a Social Security Appointment
SSA’s office locator says to make an appointment before visiting an office. Booking ahead also tells you whether you need to go in at all. Here’s how it works:
- Start online. SSA’s scheduler asks a few questions about what you need. It may tell you the task can be finished online.
- Get your appointment. If you need help from a person, it books an appointment. That appointment may be by phone or in person.
- Or call. Phone 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and say you want to schedule a phone or in-person appointment. Help is offered in English, Spanish and other languages.
- Keep the confirmation. SSA sends an email or text. Use its link to change or cancel. If a representative booked it for you, you’ll also need the code they gave you.
SSA also offers video appointments. Its data lists 90 video service sites where you meet an SSA employee on screen.
Why Calling Early Can Protect Your Benefits
The day you first contact SSA can matter as much as the day you visit. For SSI, SSA says that if you call to make an appointment, then keep it and file, it may use the date of your call as your filing date. SSA can’t pay SSI for any time before that date, so a call today can be worth more than a visit next month.
If you miss that appointment and don’t reschedule, you have 60 days from your first contact to submit a signed application. The confirmation letter SSA sends lists the exact dates. So even when the next open appointment is weeks away, book it now. The SSI guide explains the full application.
Tasks That Still Need an Office Visit
Most tasks don’t need you at an office during business hours. A few do:
- A first Social Security number at age 12 or older. SSA requires an in-person interview and asks for evidence that you never had a number.
- Corrections to your record. If you flag a wrong birth date, birthplace, parent’s name or citizenship status when you request a replacement card online, SSA asks you to bring original documents to a field office or card center.
- Anything you can’t finish online or by phone. SSA’s scheduler decides whether you meet in person or by phone.
For these, an office’s posted hours set your window, so book early in the day if you can.
Office Hours vs Phone Hours
Each way of reaching SSA keeps its own hours. This is the full picture:
| Channel | Hours |
|---|---|
| Most field offices | Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM |
| National line, live agent (1-800-772-1213) | Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time |
| National line, automated services | 24 hours a day |
| Appointment help line | Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., in most U.S. time zones |
| ssa.gov and my Social Security | Any time |
For phone calls, SSA says waits are usually shorter in the morning, later in the week and later in the month. The phone number guide lists every line.
When Offices Close Unexpectedly
Offices sometimes close or switch to phone-only service for construction, weather or other events. SSA posts these by state on its office closings and emergencies page, and some offices temporarily serve visitors by appointment only. On October 1, 2026, for example, the office in Marianna, Florida, was offering phone help only for the day, and SSA announced the Saipan office would close on Friday, October 2.
If a storm or emergency stops your regular payment, SSA says to call your local office. Its number is on the office page here.
Card Centers Keep Their Own Rules
Some cities have a Social Security Card Center. SSA’s locator says to use one if you only need a new or replacement card, a personal information update, or a visit your employer asked for. Card Centers don’t handle benefit applications or appeals, so book those at a regular field office.
Before you go anywhere, check the what to bring guide. SSA accepts only original documents or certified copies, and the wrong paper is the most common reason for a second trip. If you just need a new card, the replacement card guide shows how to do it online.
Picking an Office in a Big City
Large cities have several offices with the same hours, so choose by location and transit. Chicago has ten, including the Chicago Loop office on West Washington Boulevard. San Antonio has four and Dallas three. Each office page shows its exact address, including the suite or floor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Social Security Offices Close for Lunch?
Offices on the standard schedule are listed as open straight through, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If your office lists different hours, its page here shows them by day.
Can I Get an Appointment the Same Day?
SSA's scheduler finds the next appointment that fits your task, and it may be by phone rather than in person. If the matter is urgent, such as a missing payment after an emergency, SSA says to call your local office.
Can Someone Else Go to the Office for Me?
A caregiver or family member can handle many tasks for another person. SSA may ask for proof of custody or responsibility, such as court custody papers, and for proof the person can't file, such as a doctor's certification.
What Time Should I Arrive for My Appointment?
Plan to arrive a few minutes early with your documents ready, and bring your confirmation email or text. If you can't make it, change or cancel using the link in that confirmation.
Is the Phone Line Open Longer Than the Office?
Yes. The national line, 1-800-772-1213, takes calls 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday, and its automated services run 24 hours a day.
Where Do I See if My Office Is Closed Today?
SSA lists temporary closings and phone-only days by state on its office closings and emergencies page.
