Social Security Payment Schedule 2026

When Will I Get My Social Security Payment in 2026?

The Social Security payment schedule for 2026 pays most benefits on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, based on your birthday. SSI arrives on the 1st, and people who started benefits before May 1997 or get both Social Security and SSI are paid on the 3rd. When a date lands on a weekend or holiday, SSA's calendar moves the payment to an earlier business day. The full 2026 table is below, and the office finder lists every local office if a payment goes missing.

How SSA Picks Your Payment Day

Three rules decide which column is yours. SSA prints all three on the calendar.

  • Birthday Wednesdays. If none of the rules below apply, your birthday sets the day. Born on the 1st to the 10th: second Wednesday. Born on the 11th to the 20th: third Wednesday. Born on the 21st to the 31st: fourth Wednesday.
  • The 3rd of the month. If you got Social Security before May 1997, Social Security pays you on the 3rd.
  • SSI on the 1st. Supplemental Security Income arrives on the 1st. If you get both Social Security and SSI, Social Security comes on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st, whatever your birthday.

SSA’s page on payment timing adds that the date depends on your birthday and the type of benefits you get. Your own exact date always shows in your account, covered further down.

Months When the Money Comes Early

Payments never wait for a weekend or holiday to pass. SSA’s 2026 calendar moves them earlier instead, and a few of those shifts catch people out.

  • SSI paid at the end of the month before. The 1st fell on a weekend or holiday five times: January (paid December 31, 2025), February (paid January 30), March (paid February 27), August (paid July 31) and November (paid October 30). January 2027 SSI also arrives early, on December 31, 2026.
  • The 3rd-of-month group paid early. January’s payment came on Friday, January 2. May’s came on Friday, May 1. July’s came on Thursday, July 2. October’s comes Friday, October 2.
  • A Tuesday in November. The second Wednesday of November is November 11, Veterans Day. SSA’s calendar pays the birthday 1st to 10th group the day before, on Tuesday, November 10.

If you get SSI, budget with care in those months. The July 31 deposit is your August payment, so no SSI arrives in August itself.

Lining Up Bills With Your Payment Day

The spread between the earliest and latest birthday payments is wide. In 2026 the second Wednesday falls between the 8th and the 14th, while the fourth Wednesday falls between the 22nd and the 28th. If your birthday falls early in the month, a rent or utility bill due on the 1st arrives two to three weeks after your last deposit.

Many landlords and utilities let you move a due date. Use the table above to pick a date a few days after your payment, so a weekend or holiday shift never leaves you short. If you get SSI and Social Security together, your two deposits land on the 1st and the 3rd, close together at the start of the month.

The 2026 Increase and Your Monthly Amount

SSA set a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. It started with Social Security benefits payable for January 2026. Higher SSI payments began with the deposit on December 31, 2025.

Your new amount appears in your COLA notice. SSA places most notices in the Message Center of your my Social Security account, and you can choose to get notices online instead of by mail.

If a lender or landlord needs proof of the new amount, download a benefit verification letter. SSA calls it a proof of income letter.

How to Check Your Payment Date and History

You don’t need to call or visit to confirm a date. You have two quick options.

Option What you get When it’s available
my Social Security account Upcoming and past payments, amounts, direct deposit details Any time online
SSA’s automated phone line, 1-800-772-1213 Payment delivery information; say “check delivery” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Phone representative, same number Help with a problem on your record Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most time zones

People who are deaf or hard of hearing can call TTY 1-800-325-0778. The Social Security phone number guide explains the menu and the least busy times to call.

Direct Deposit, Direct Express and the End of Paper Checks

Federal law requires Social Security and SSI to be paid electronically. You choose one of two ways:

  • Direct deposit into your checking or savings account. SSA says the money is ready to use as soon as your bank opens on your payment day.
  • A Direct Express Debit Mastercard, a prepaid card from the U.S. Treasury for people without a bank account. Treasury says there is no credit check, no monthly fee and one free ATM withdrawal for each deposit. Your money loads onto the card on your normal payment date.

SSA stopped issuing paper benefit checks on September 30, 2025. SSA says paper checks were 16 times more likely to be lost or stolen than electronic payments.

To set up or change direct deposit, sign in to my Social Security, enroll through Treasury’s Go Direct site, or call Go Direct at 1-877-874-6347. Many banks can also send the change to SSA for you through a process called Automated Enrollment. If you’re moving, update your address and bank details together using the change of address guide.

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

Start with the calendar. SSA asks you to allow three more mailing days after the expected date before contacting it.

For an electronic payment, call your bank or card provider first. A deposit can be delayed in posting. If it still hasn’t arrived, report it to SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or at your local office. SSA reviews the case and replaces the payment if it is due.

The lost or stolen Social Security payment guide walks through each case: a missing direct deposit, a lost Direct Express card and an old paper check.

If the person who received benefits has died, the rules for that month’s payment are different. The death benefit guide covers reporting a death and what family members may receive.

Do You Need to Visit an Office?

Almost never for a payment date. The calendar, your online account and the automated phone line answer it.

Go in person when SSA asks you to, or when you need help fixing a payment problem face to face. The office finder covers all 1,231 Social Security offices. Of those, 1,194 keep standard hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Large cities have several offices. In Brooklyn you can choose among offices such as Boro Hall at 195 Montague St. Los Angeles, Houston and Phoenix each list their offices with addresses and phone numbers. If SSI is your main benefit, the SSI office guide explains what to bring. Check office hours and appointments before you go.

Payment Scams to Watch for

Scammers time their calls and texts to payment days and the yearly increase. SSA warns about callers who:

  • claim you must pay to activate your cost-of-living adjustment;
  • threaten to suspend your Social Security number or stop your payments;
  • ask you to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or cash.

SSA services are free. If a message rushes you or asks for money, hang up and report it to SSA’s Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Birthday Is on the 15th. When Do I Get Paid?

Birthdays from the 11th to the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday. In 2026 that means January 21, February 18, March 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18 and December 16.

Why Did I Get Two SSI Payments in One Month?

When the 1st of a month falls on a weekend or holiday, SSI is paid on the last business day of the month before. In 2026 that happens on January 30, February 27, July 31, October 30 and December 31. The early deposit is next month's payment, so the month it was meant for may have no SSI deposit of its own.

Does the Birthday Schedule Apply if I Get Social Security and SSI?

No. SSA's calendar says that if you receive both Social Security and SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st, whatever your birthday.

When Do 2027 Payments Start?

SSA has already published its 2027 calendar. It shows January 2027 SSI and the 3rd-of-month payments arriving early, on December 31, 2026, because January 1, 2027 is a holiday and January 3 is a Sunday.

Can I See My Exact Payment Date Online?

Yes. Sign in to your my Social Security account to see your upcoming and past payments. You can also call SSA's automated line at 1-800-772-1213 any time and say "check delivery."

Did Payments Go Up in 2026?

Yes. SSA set a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. It started with Social Security benefits payable for January 2026, and higher SSI payments began on December 31, 2025.
