Social Security Card

What is a Social Security Card?

A Social Security card is a unique nine-digit number that stays with you for life under Social Security. It allows the Social Security Administration to accurately document your covered wages or self-employment earnings. It’s also used to monitor your record if you’ve begun receiving benefits from the government.

Why Do I Need One?

A Social Security number is required to get a job, collect Social Security benefits and qualify for other government services. However, typically you don’t need to show your Social Security card often. Never carry your card with you. Leave it at home or in a safe place with other critical documents.
